  31.      The user needs to upgrade SMTP for NetWare Global MHS from 1.0 to 1.0b.

  33. SOLUTION
  34.  
  35.      Use this patch to upgrade SMTP from 1.0 to SMTP 1.0b.  If you have an
  36.      NGMSMTP.NLM that is not dated 2-16-93, this upgrade procedure will not
  37.      work.  To determine the current SMTP version, type MODULES at the server
  38.      console prompt.

  48.      UPGRADING FROM versions 1.0 to 1.0b
  49.      -----------------------------------

  51.      This file describes how to upgrade SMTP for NetWare Global MHS versions
  52.      1.0 to 1.0b.
  53.  
  54.      This upgrade provides the following fixes and enhancements:
  55.  
  56.      New Features:
  57.  
  58.      ■    Expiration-Date support.
  59.  
  60.      ■    Non-delivery information will be sent to senders for all messages
  61.           where the recipient is not known.
  62.  
  63.      ■    Message-ID conversion from SMTP to SMF and vice-versa.
  64.  
  65.      ■    Full support for the SMTP directive to address the INTERNET users
  66.           from SMF70 or SMF71 applications.
  67.  
  68.      Enhancements:
  69.  
  70.      ■    Attachment (Binary) translation times are improved. 
  71.           (UUENCODE/UUDECODE), Auto-UUDECODE features are faster than in SMTP
  72.           1.0.

  74.      ■    Socket (buffered) IO improved outbound delivery.

  76.      ■    DNS Resolver fix.  If there are multiple MX records, the outbound
  77.           will try to deliver one after the other in the preference order
  78.           until it succeeds.

  80.      SMTP directive in the SMF71 Addressing:
  81.  
  82.           Global MHS users use SMF71 addresses to communicate with other
  83.           Global MHS users. Usually INTERNET users will not be registered as
  84.           Global MHS users.  Therefore, to facilitate communicating with these
  85.           non-registered INTERNET users, SMTP provides an easy to use method
  86.           called the SMTP directive.  To use this method, you would add the
  87.           user's SMTP address to the end of the SMF71 address.

  104.      Configuration for SMTP Directive Support:

  106.           There are a few  ways to support this feature based on your current
  107.           configuration.  The following describes both ways based on specific
  108.           configurations.  Choose the one that matches your configuration.

  141.           The above configuration shows various Global MHS servers and MHS 1.5
  142.           hosts using the NGMSMTP module to exchange messages with INTERNET
  143.           users.

  148.           Configuration of the SMTP Special Workgroup
  149.           ===========================================

  151.           To address all the users in the INTERNET world, you must define a
  152.           Special SMTP workgroup in Global MHS.  After defined, all the
  153.           INTERNET users are considered to be the users in this special
  154.           workgroup.
  155.  
  156.           1.   Select the NGM Server where the NGMSMTP module is running.
  157.  
  158.           2.   Make sure the DNS resolver is enabled before running this
  159.                setup.
  160.  
  161.           3.   Select the "Workgroup, User, DList" option from the Main Menu
  162.                and create the following workgroup:
  163.  
  164.                Workgroup Name:        INTERNET.rootwg
  165.                Workgroup Short Name:  INTERNET
  166.

  169.                rootwg is the Root Workgroup of your NGM Local Domain.

  171.           4.   Then select the "This Server," "Edit Configuration File" Option
  172.                from the Main Menu.  Under [NGMSMTP] Context, define the

  306.      Installation Instructions:

  308.      *** Warning ***  This patch is designed to upgrade SMTP version 1.0 to
  309.      SMTP version 1.0b. If you have an NGMSMTP.NLM that is not dated 02-16-93,
  310.      this upgrade procedure will not work.  To determine your current SMTP
  311.      version, type MODULES at the server console prompt.
  312.  
  313.      WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO FIRST?
  314.      -----------------------------
  315.      Use this upgrade to modify an existing SMTP for NetWare Global MHS
  316.      installation.  Before you install this upgrade, verify that the original
  317.      SMTP for NetWare Global MHS version 1.0 is installed on your server.  For
  318.      information on installing 1.0, refer to your "NetWare Global Messaging
  319.      SMTP Protocol Module Administrator's Guide," part number 100-001202-001.

  321.      WHICH FILES ARE UPGRADED?
  322.      -------------------------
  323.  
  324.      The following files are modified during the SMTP 1.0b upgrade procedure.
  325.  
  326.      1.   NGMSMTP.NLM
  327.      2.   SMTPCON.NLM
  328.      3.   README.TXT
  329.  
  330.      This upgrade does not change the serial number and maximum number of
  331.      licensed users for your installation.
  332.  
  333.      UPGRADING YOUR SERVER
  334.      ---------------------
  335.  
  336.      1.   Log in to your NGM server as supervisor.
  337.  
  338.      2.   Verify that your server has at least 2 MB of free hard disk space. 
  339.           This is the recommended minimum required to perform this upgrade.
  340.  
  341.      3.   The contents of the SMTP for NetWare Global MHS patch are as
  342.           follows:
  343.  
  344.           ■    README.SMT
  345.           ■    PATCH.EXE
  346.           ■    PATCHSMT.BAT
  347.           ■    SMTP1B.RTP
  348.  
  349.      4.   Copy the files PATCH.EXE, PATCHSMT.BAT, and SMTP1B.RTP to the root
  350.           NGM directory.  The default directory is: <drive:>\NGM.
  351.  
  352.           Example:

  354.                     COPY PATCH.EXE     <drive:>\NGM\*.*
  355.                     COPY PATCHSMT.BAT  <drive:>\NGM\*.*
  356.                     COPY SMTP1B.RTP    <drive:>\NGM\*.*

  358.           If you installed NetWare Global MHS in a different directory, be
  359.           sure to copy the upgrade files to that directory.  For example, if
  360.           NetWare Global MHS is installed in the directory
  361.           <drive:>\PUBLIC\MAIL\NGM\, enter the following:
  362.  
  363.           Example:
  364.  
  365.                     COPY PATCH.EXE     <drive:>\PUBLIC\MAIL\NGM\*.*
  366.                     COPY PATCHSMT.BAT  <drive:>\PUBLIC\MAIL\NGM\*.*
  367.                     COPY SMTP1B.RTP    <drive:>\PUBLIC\MAIL\NGM\*.*
  368.  
  369.           The patch program searches all subdirectories to find the
  370.           appropriate files to upgrade.  Therefore, it is very important to
  371.           start the upgrade procedure from the correct directory.
  372.  
  373.      5.   Unload SMTP at the server console, and make a backup copy of your
  374.           .\NGM\SMTP directory structure as well as the .\NGM\BIN\NGMSMTP.NLM
  375.           and .\NGM\BIN\SMTPCON.NLM.
  376.  
  377.           IMPORTANT:     Do not save backup files under the same directory
  378.                          structure in which you installed NGM or SMTP.  The
  379.                          upgrade procedure will update the first file found
  380.                          within the directory structure.  Therefore, if this
  381.                          first file happens to be a backup file, the correct
  382.                          system file will not be upgraded.
  383.  
  384.      6.   Change to the root NGM directory (where you copied the upgrade
  385.           files).  Enter the following:
  386.  
  387.                PATCHSMT
  388.  
  389.           The patch program upgrades all appropriate files.  The patch program
  390.           also retains a log of the results in a file called RESULTS.TXT.  To
  391.           verify your upgrade installation, view the contents of RESULTS.TXT
  392.           after the upgrade is complete.
  393.  
  394.      7.   The patch process will place the new README.TXT file in the
  395.           .\NGM\SMTP directory to avoid overwriting other README.TXT files.
  396.  
  397.      8.   During the patch process, a BACKUP directory is created under the
  398.           directory from which you ran "PATCHSMT."  (Verify that no previous
  399.           BACKUP directory exists).  The BACKUP directory contains all files
  400.           that were changed and a file called UNPATCH.BAK.  If you want to
  401.           undo your upgrade and return your installation to its previous
  402.           state, perform the following procedure:
  403.  
  404.           8a.  To restore your system, change to the BACKUP directory, copy
  405.                UNPATCH.BAK to UNPATCH.BAT and type UNPATCH.  This file will
  406.                delete all new files in the appropriate directories and replace
  407.                them with the files that originally existed.
  408.  
  409.           8b.  Verify the original files have been correctly reinstalled and
  410.                delete the BACKUP directory before attempting to upgrade the
  411.                system for a second time.
  412.  
  413.           8c.  Do not delete the BACKUP directory until you are satisfied that
  414.                the upgrade procedure was successful.
